The town's present name arrived with the railroad in 1871: Evan Howell's grandson was asked to help dedicate the new depot, and rather than keep the old name, he proposed renaming the town after Duluth, Minnesota, which had recently become nationally famous after a U.S. congressman mocked a federal railroad subsidy to that city in a widely quoted speech. Reasoning that the free publicity could do the growing Georgia town some good, the name stuck. The Southeastern Railway Museum, founded in 1970 on a 30-acre site, displays more than 90 pieces of historic rolling stock alongside a restored 1871 passenger depot.
